Joyce Markham, MS.Ed, LSCSW, NCPGC With over 25 years working with individuals and families, I have come to believe, If someone could “fix” their problem themselves, they would. Coming through the door asking for help is a huge step. For most of us, asking for help is difficult in any situation.
I want to provide a safe and confidential environment to allow you to explore your issue(s). Together, we will explore the past, work to accept the present and prepare for the future. We cannot change the past; but, we can change our perspectives of the past. With new insight and new tools for communication, we begin to empower ourselves.
I have a strong background working with individuals and families who are struggling with alcohol and other drugs. I believe in the 12-Step recovery program to support individual and family recovery and use the Bio-Psy-Social Model for relapse prevention.
Addiction is a family illness and there is hope and help available. Families learn to survive addiction by learning the following rule:
*Do not talk.
*Do not feel.
*Do not trust.
*Just look good.
If you grew up in a dysfunctional home or are a parent or child currently living with addiction, you may need help to break the rules and go beyond survival.
Children especially suffer and feel displaced when a parent works to maintain recovery.
Children need specially designed therapy to learn skills for surviving a dysfunctional family (a family in trouble). Words are cheap and they need to be able to express themselves using experiential tools, such as art, play, and games.
Prior to establishing a private practice in 2001, my work experience focused on addiction. My experience includes working as a family therapist for 14 years at a hospital based program, as a therapist in an adolescent inpatient and outpatient treatment program and as an outpatient therapist at a mental health center.
Over the years, I have enjoyed group therapy with adolescent incest survivors, family support groups, support groups for children with addictive parents, continuing care groups for individuals following treatment, and support groups for gamblers.
I have been active in the grass roots development of the Kansas Coalition for Problem Gambling. I currently serve as the President-Elect. I was the first in Kansas to be certified by the American Academy of Problem Gamblers Counselors. Currently, I am Nationally Certified as a Problem Gambling Counselor.
